|

Hey,
I've got a client that is running Server 2003 and after a bit of research decided to give Vice Versa a go for some data back up needs. All in all, seems like a pretty great program, but it is causing an odd error to pop up once in awhile. Some mornings when they go to log in there is an error message under the log in window:
"The file or directory \ is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility."
The logs show there is a second error:
"The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\Harddisk\VolumeShadowCopy20"
Of course I've checked the obvious, running chkdsk on every drive shows no corrupt or unreadable files. None of the drives are dirty either. When I uncheck the "use volume shadow copy" feature in the profiles no more error. So I know Vice Versa is triggering it somehow, but I don't know why or how or if there is a fix. Various files we want to backup are continually in use so I would of course like to use this feature.
Suggestions?
Justin

Hi,
\Device\Harddisk\VolumeShadowCopy20 is the shadow copy created by the Windows Volume Shadow Copy service on ViceVersa's request as per option "use volume shadow copy".
This is like a "virtual" volume that is actually a snapshot of a volume.
This virtual volume is like a big file that contains a single image of the disk status (simplified explanation). The error you see reports that this big file created by the Volume Shadow Copy service is corrupted somewhere. It could be that the disk on which this file is created is not functioning properly (for the part where the file is created). If you run the chkdsk program on the original volume, you won't find any issue, because the shadow file is deleted by then.
I would check carefully the health of the entire disk in question. Chkdsk is limited in what it can check. Another possibility is that the disk is running too hot and therefore is malfunctioning.
thanks
P.S. This is the first time I hear about an issue like this with Volume Shadow Copies, so mine are only suggestions and I could be wrong!
P.S. II You could also try with a different disk if you have one on the same PC to see if you still get the same error message. _________________ --
