Hi
I've been having trouble performing synchronisation (mirror). It works fine uncompressed but when I enable compression in the profile settings, next time I run it, the following message appears:-
"My filename" in Target (Compressed) does not have the required extension ".gz". Please delete or move this file using Windows Explorer. Aborting Comparison.
I've tried deleting the file but the message then appears for the next file, and so on. I've even tried sync to a new empty folder but the same thing happens.
I'd be grateful for any ideas as to what the problem is; I really need to be able to compress files to save space.
Thanks |

Hello
when compressing data in a folder, you will need to start with an empty target (or source, depending on which folder you enabled compression). VV expects all files in a compressed folder to be compressed, otherwise it will stop with the error message you are seeing.
thanks _________________ --

You might consider adding somewhat more robust behavior. For example, maybe VV should offer to compress uncompressed target files that it finds. (With a warning that this could take a lot of time if there are a lot of files!)
Alternately, maybe it should work whether target folders contain uncompressed files or not. There are a few obvious choices, which could be given to the user as an options choice for settings relative to compression.
Of course, any new files it writes should be compressed in this mode. However, if target and source are interchanged, uncompressing might be a good option, too. (Presumably limited only to gzipped files, but in the distant future, maybe others.)
A maybe related point is that some file types will not compress with gzip, and will likely expand, such as jpeg, mpeg, or files that are already encrypted or compressed. VV might be able to avoid a lot of wasted compute time by recognizing such files. Again, an option not to try to compress these might help.
Note that I do not use the compression feature, so some of these suggestions may already be implemented.

I've got the same error message, however i started with an empty target folder. I'm trying to compress the file in target folder only. |

When I check Target File Compression I always get an error C:\foldername\Thumbs.db (Compressed) doesnt not have the required extension .gz. I completely deleted the directory and created new one. Also Indexing is not enabled. I am also using Windows Server R2. I do not understand what is going own here. |
