I'm a long time VV user that recently bought a laptop with Vista Home Premium on it. I'm using VV to mirror to a USB-attached hard drive. I got the update to the latest version and installed it on top of my existing VVPRO2.
The first time I synced, it went fine. Next time I tried it, VV was unable to delete files on the target drive, either for an update or a delete. I exited and installed the update to the latest build again and took the option to start VVPRO at the end of the install. It worked!
But the next time I tried to sync, same problem. If I apply the update, I can delete files. If it's a fresh boot, I'm back to the problem. The about box says build 2014 every time.
I can't figure this one out.
Thanks,

Hello
I suspect this is something to do with the new UAC (User Account Control)functionality in Vista.
When you run ViceVersa after installation, VV runs as full administrator with full privileges. When you run VV from the start menu it runs as a standard user with no admin privileges.
To work around this, try running ViceVersa as full administrator. Select the ViceVersa icon then right click on it and from the menu select "Run as Administrator"
I do not know why when VV not running as admin it is unable to delete files from the USB drive... I need to investigate further.
If you remove files from the USB drive using the Windows Explorer in Vista, does it work OK?

Your theory proved correct. If I run it as Administrator, VV has no problem deleting files on the USB drive.
And yes, if I manually delete the files on the USB drive, VV has no problem.
I'll continue to run it as Administrator until or if you find another solutions.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Hi,
I'm seeing the same behavior - can't create/delete/modify some files on a USB external doing a synchronization under Vista Business unless I run ViceVersa as an administrator. |

Thanks, I tried here on our Vista business machine and it seems to work fine... I wonder if it something to do with permissions. Is the USB drive formatted as NTFS or FAT32? What type of drive is it? thanks _________________ --

In my case it's NTFS. Vista seems to be default mounting the drive so standard users don't have write permissions (although users have Create folders permissions). On my XP machine, I have administrative privileges so this isn't an issue. I'll try to change this for my next synch.
On a semi-related question, if I'm using synchronize and a USB disk between two computers, does it matter which drive is source and which is target, and should the database file be shared (on the usb drive) or separate for each PC?
Thanks,
DH |

Did not know that ... yes, then you need to run ViceVersa "As administratror" to sync vs a NTFS formatted USB drive...

it does not matter which drive is source and which is target. The database should not be shared (on the usb drive), create 2 profiles with different tracking databases. thanks _________________ --
